In the first two weeks of February 2010 I'm joining a group of other health professionals on a cycle ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff. I’m not completely crazy so have signed up to ride from Nelson to Christchurch over 3 days – a mere 450 k. I can currently manage 70 k but have sore legs the next day!
As you will now know, the Heart Foundation is aiming to raise $5 million to support a major initiative to improve heart health for all New Zealanders. We are aiming to contribute $1 million towards this goal through the The Great Ride for Heart.

In my work as a cardiologist and researcher at Middlemore Hospital, and with the School of Population Health, my major focus has been on improving heart health and preventing heart attacks and strokes. I believe that the Heart Foundation’s plan to establish a professorship in Cardiovascular Prevention to coordinate and focus prevention efforts will be valuable for my patients and all New Zealanders. I also strongly believe that most of us would benefit from more exercise, and that this is good for our emotional and physical well being. I have been training by biking to and from work most days of the week and have halved my petrol consumption and doubled my muscle mass (not as impressive as it sounds) – good for my wallet and the environment.

I and my colleagues are happy to do the riding but I would appreciate your help to reach my personal goal of raising $3,000.
