Each day 16 New Zealanders die as a result of coronary heart disease. That's one person every 90 minutes. And many of these deaths are premature and preventable.

Heart disease is the biggest killer of dads in there 40s. Nearly 2 years ago the reality of this became very real to me and my family when my husband Dallas died suddenly on an overcast Sunday morning at the playground with our 5 year old daughter. He was only 46 years and looking forward to a long life unaware that he was a walking time bomb with the silent killer ischaemic heart disease… if only we knew. I also lost my dad to a heart attack when I was 16 and more recently my father-in-law Roy to ischaemic heart disease as well.

With your support perhaps other families will have the warning we never had and more can be learnt on how to protect the next generation, like our girls, from this killer.

With the second anniversary of Dallas' death on 28 June I wanted to do something positive in his memory for me and for others. So, the idea of running the Wellington Half-marathon as a Heart Racer was born (even though I only started jogging at Christmas and I've never run a distance like this before… 21 km, what am I thinking!).

My daughters have decided they are joining in too and will be running the Kids Magic Mile at the event.

So, help us as we join the race to beat heart disease. We've signed up as Heart Racers to raise money to support the Heart Foundation.

I'll do all the hard work (train for and complete the event), but I really need you to make a difference to the hearts of New Zealanders.
