On 28 June 2009 Dallas Crampton became another victim of heart disease, one of the 16 New Zealanders that die each day from coronary heart disease.

Dallas was only 46 years old. He was a loving husband and father of 5 and 8 year old girls. He was a very involved dad and enjoyed his life and work in the Porirua community. In the week or so before he died he mentioned some breathlessness and a tight feeling in his chest when he was stressed. But he was strong, busy and active. He thought these were signs that he was becoming unfit and he set about changing that.

On the Sunday morning of his death we were on holiday in Greytown. After a lazy morning Dallas went for a jog and met us at the playground. Our older daughter and I then went for a walk. That was the last time I saw Dallas alive. Shortly after he fell to the ground while alone with our 5 year old. One artery was blocked, his heart could no longer pump blood around his body, it stopped … and he died.

In that park Dallas only had a few minutes to survive. He would have needed a defibrillator on hand to restart his heart. Instead he had a brave little girl who waited with him until a couple walked past to help her. There are many what ifs looking back, but if he had gone to the doctor when he felt 'strange', things could have been very different.

Heart disease is the biggest killer of dads in their 40s. It is the number one cause of death in New Zealand. The tragedy is that many of these deaths, like Dallas’, are premature and preventable.

I can’t turn the clock back for Dallas and our family but with your support maybe other families will get the second chance we never had. Maybe research will find ways to protect the next generation, like our girls, from this killer.
