Each day 16 New Zealanders die as a result of coronary heart disease. That's one person every 90 minutes.

So far I haven't been one of them, but I did lose a friend aged 40. Unlike me he was fit and thin but collapsed at his office while arranging a charity golf day! Three days earlier he had told me that I needed to slow down!

Cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke & blood vessel disease) is the single biggest cause of death in New Zealand. It causes 40 percent of all deaths annually in our country - making it more deadly than all forms of cancer.

But the good news is that many risk factors for heart disease are preventable, if people make healthy lifestyle choices.

So, help me as I join the race to beat heart disease. I've signed up as a Heart Racer to raise money to support the Heart Foundation as I attack the Auckland Marathon - well the first half of it! I'm aiming to raise $2110 - that's $100 per km!

By donating through my webpage you will be helping the Heart Foundation continue its vital work in research, cardiac rehabilitation, education programmes and resources.

I've done all the hard work training and will plod my way around the course, giving it a really good go. All you have to to is give dosh!
