Event: The Great Ride for Heart 2010
Event Date: 1/2/2010

Greetings!

In the first two weeks of February (very soon now) a group of cardiologists/masochists and health professionals will be biking from Cape Reinga to Bluff, trading in white coats- does anyone except me wear them anymore? - for bike pants (yes I realise these are not a fashion item but they do help and I am going to need all that I can get) and beginning an epic cycle ride that will cover the length of New Zealand. I am doing one of the 14 legs, was not brave enough to do more. Did not own a decent road bike but kindly lent one now and have a lot of training to do but I am starting/have started

I volunteered for this with some Dutch courage assuming that some of my colleagues from the 'Naki would be joining me - tragically not the case and now I am hoist by my own petard and will have to do this. Bugger.

The aim is to boost awareness of heart disease prevention and help raise $1 million for the Heart Foundation's Cardiovascular Research Fund.
Every cent we raise will go directly (all riders bear their own costs)
towards an essential chair in new preventive heart health research at the University of Auckland, which will benefit All New Zealanders - after all about half of us will have a cardiac event or problem in our lifetime.
Along the way we will engage with locals and stage fundraising events in selected towns to raise awareness of heart health from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

I am doing the closest leg to the 'Naki namely Marton to Wellington. This is also purely fortuitously one of the shortest at about 165 kms, but does involve a very big hill at the 153 km mark. I do this on the 7th February, and hopefully will live to tell the tale. (If not the waiting lists will get a bit longer).

I need your support to complete my mission of fundraising at least $1000 myself! Made that milestone now trying to get some more and see if I can get to $2000 - Sponsorship is that I start - if I finish in a hearse/ambulance/helicopter money still gratefully received.

I'll do most of the work (train for, start and hopefully complete the ride without clinical assistance from my colleagues), but I really need you to make a difference to the hearts of New Zealanders. We in Taranaki need to show the rest of New Zealand how generous and kind Taranakians are (any donations from outside the region also gratefully received), and fundraise well and beat the competition! Some DHB's do not have a single rider, some have several, we only have one so lets make a major 'Naki-impact. (The waikato cardiologist is still ahead of me in the sponsorship race. Help!!)

Please could you sponsor me?

Select the "Make a donation" button below. It's simple, fast and totally secure and the money goes directly to the Heart Foundation's bank account- or you could drop off your donation in the Cardiology at Taranaki Base or in Hawera Hospital. All donations are welcome, of any size. They all add up.

If you live in New Zealand your donation is tax deductible and a receipt will be issued.

So please help me today! And pass it on to your family/whanau and especially to any generous friends! This money is to help ALL of us.
Many thanks for your support.

Cheers
ian
