If you've got this far you must be considering sponsoring me to participate in this utter madness so here's my pitch as to why I'd REALLY appreciate it:

The original decision to enter the Auckland Marathon was purely based on weeks of annoying peer pressure telling me that it would be GREAT. After weeks of mind-numbing and thoroughly unenjoyable training without a hint of fun I'm convinced that there's absolutely zero merit in all this UNLESS I can also raise funds for something worthwhile in the process…

It’s only the Quarter Marathon (yes don’t worry, I’ve not gone completely bonkers) but here’s how I got here:

I’m surrounded at home and work by lots of those enthusiastic and irritatingly fit runner-types who claimed to me that this would be an AMAZING experience and it can actually be enjoyable to run for miles on end purely for running’s sake…Personally, I had my doubts.

After a few weeks of training by running, running and running some more I am bored out of my brain with it and it’s definitely not getting any easier. I’m sure now that these running freaks actually have a screw loose - I mean, seriously, are they not aware of the existence of sports which can actually be competitive, challenging, social and, God- forbid, ENJOYABLE, at the same time as getting you fit??

My first road-running training run has resulted in me catching a wretched cold after being caught halfway to Mission Bay in a downpour.

My running shoes are now blemished with a big blood stain when my foot actually started bleeding from too much running.

Need I say more of the utter pain and tedium that all this marathon training running malarkey has put me through?

So please help me actually glean something worthwhile out of all of this foolishness and make a donation to a good cause. Instructions as follows:

Select the "Make a donation" button below. It's simple, fast and totally secure and the money goes directly to the Heart Foundation's bank account.

If you live in New Zealand your donation is tax deductible and a receipt will be issued.

So please help me today!

Otherwise the only thing gained is proof that people who like running marathons are nutters and that I'll never be stupid enough to enter another one…
