On the first of February I will be joining a group of cardiologists and health professionals, who will be trading in their stethoscopes for bike pants and helmets and beginning an epic cycle ride that will cover the length of New Zealand.

The ride starts on 1st February at the mystical and beautiful location of Te Rerenga or commonly known as Cape Reinga. It is the homeland of Ngati Kuri and we are fortunate that Ngati Kuri will be blessing the start of this wonderful event.

I am very supportive of the great work that the NHF does in promoting healthier heart lifestyles and cardiac research. I am taking time out from my busy practice to support this awesome initiative. Heart disease is something we are all touched by losing loved ones and our leaders before their time. Turning the tide of heart disease among Maori in the community I call home is a passion of mine.

Whilst I will not be able to do the whole ride I will be riding the first leg from Te Rerenga Wairua to Rawene (181km) as part of the great ride.

Cycling is an excellent form of exercise that increases your fitness and reduces the reliance on vehicles. I cycle to and from work 30km return and have been active in encouraging others in my community to take up cycling.

Our aim is to boost awareness of heart disease prevention and help raise $1 million for the Heart Foundation's Cardiovascular Research Fund.
Every cent we raise will go directly towards an essential chair in new preventive heart health research at the University of Auckland, which will benefit All New Zealanders.

Along the way we will engage with locals and stage fundraising events in selected towns to raise awareness of heart health from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
