Auckland Marathon

In 2008, a week before my 44th birthday, I had a massive heart attack while I was on a bike ride with my partner. After being admitted to Hutt Cardio Unit I found that my cholesterol was really high and I had 4 blocked arteries. I was completely surprised because it was out of the blue and I'd always eaten a traditonal Japanese diet. I was a smoker though. Within 2 weeks I had a quadruple bypass which is something I never want to ever experience again.
The support I got from the cardio staff at Hutt & Wakefield hospitals was amazing. I decided that I was a fool if I didn't do something to help myself when all of these people who didn't even know me were doing so much for me. I stopped smoking straight away, attended Heart Foundation classes which really helped me to make the lifestyle changes I needed to make, and started walking. At first I could only walk down the hall. Gradually I started jogging for a power pole at a time. i couldn't even imagine jogging 1km! Now I run 5 times a week and in October this year I ran the Auckland half marathon!
I feel so lucky having a second chance and grateful for everyone who has helped me get back to being even healthier than I was before. To be able to fundraise while I run is the ultimate.
