A group comprised mainly of New Zealand's leading cardiologists and health professionals have now completed their epic journey from Cape Reinga to Bluff with their initial $1m target achieved. However, we still need your support to reach the overall goal of $5m - to establish the Heart Foundation's Cardiovascular Research Fund.

The riders paid all their own expenses and every cent raised will go directly towards setting up a research hub for preventive heart health at the University of Auckland, to be endowed in perpetuity for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

It was a pleasure to ride with the peleton on February 9th, 10th & 11th ; from Nelson to Murchison, on to Hanmer Springs and then to Christchurch. I want to thank all of the core riders and support team who made this experience one that I will always cherish.

This is personal for me. I have really enjoyed to giving something back to the people who fixed me up with a new heart valve when I was in critical need of one in 2007. The fact I could help by using my passion for cycling was an added bonus, especially with a peleton of heart surgeons. Prior to my operation I knew I was in good hands, learning that my surgeon Mr. Mahon and my anaesthetist at Capital & Coast Health are both active cyclists.

Money donated has been matched dollar for dollar thanks to the generosity of The Douglas Trust.
