Each day 16 New Zealanders die as a result of coronary heart disease. That's one person every 90 minutes. And many of these deaths are premature and preventable.

My family has been affected by cardiovascular disease, including playing a role in cutting short the lives and careers of both my grandfathers. I'm sure that many of you will know people who have been affected too, whether it be in a minor or more serious way.

The good news is that many risk factors for heart disease are preventable, if people make healthy lifestyle choices.

I've signed up as a Heart Racer to raise money to support the Heart Foundation. By donating through my webpage you will be helping the Heart Foundation continue its vital work in research, cardiac rehabilitation, education programmes and resources.

I know many of you will already be supporting other great initiatives like the Oxfam Trailwalker. Give some thought to making even a small donation to this cause as well. You never know when you might need it. Besides, I got rid of all the terrible puns about "beating" heart disease, so that's gotta be worth a couple of dollars…
