**My Pledge: A Heart, A Chair, One Gear**
In February I will be joining a group of health and other professionals passionate about heart health to undertake an epic ride the length of New Zealand. Each of us core riders have vowed to raise $10,000 and boost awareness of heart disease prevention along the way. We need your support to achieve this.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the No. 1 killer of men and women, responsible for 40% of all deaths in NZ. Heart attacks are increasing in younger adults, and few of us are untouched by the effects of CVD among family and friends. Yet much of this is preventable.

The Great Ride for Heart is aiming to achieve a target of $1 million for the Heart Foundation’s Cardiovascular Research Fund. This fund is truly life saving, complementing existing clinical research with a focus on preventing this disease before its devastating effects cascade through our communities.

Defeating CVD before a hospital bed (or worse) is needed is critical to all of us - only prevention can ease the strain and cost of the health system, reduce the economic and social burden of disease, and enable each of us to lead the lives we choose.

**What am I doing about it?**
I’ve seen enough heartbreak among my family and friends - to the Heart Foundation I’ve pledged to raise $10k and complete the 2200km ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff on a fixed gear bicycle. For you non-cyclists this is the equivalent of driving a car without a clutch stuck in second gear the length of NZ. I’ll let my heart do the talking.

To my family I’ve pledged that I have not given away all my weekends and holidays from now to Feb to training. The only way I can achieve this is by discarding other transport options in favour of a bicycle, supplemented by plenty of very early morning starts.

**What can you do?**
I need your support to complete my fundraising pledge. My efforts in fundraising, awareness, training, and the actual ride expenses are not costing the Heart Foundation a penny.

Not only does 100% of your donation go directly to the Heart Foundation, but every dollar you donate will be matched by a benefactor up to the tune of $500,000 (give me $200, you get $66 back as a tax credit, and the Heart Foundation gets $400!!).

By supporting me you will help us not only save lives from CVD but contribute to the transformational change across society that this fund represents – every New Zealander will benefit from your donation.
