Event: The Great Ride for Heart 2010

On the 11th February I will be joining a group of cardiologists and health professionals trading white coats for bike pants, and will cycle with them from Hanmer to Christchurch as part of their epic cycle ride covering the length of New Zealand.

Our aim is to boost awareness of heart disease prevention and help raise $1 million for the Heart Foundation's Cardiovascular Research Fund.
Every cent we raise will go directly towards an essential chair in new preventive heart health research at the University of Auckland, which will benefit All New Zealanders. Although a cancer researcher, heart health has always been of particular importance to me. My father (56 yrs) died when I was 16 following a series of myocardial infarctions making me realise at an early age the importance of preventative heart health. My mother died more recently with vascular dementia and stroke. I am joining this ride in their memory and to help others avoid the many problems of heart and cardiovascular disease.

Along the way the group will engage with locals and stage fundraising events in selected towns from Cape Reinga to Bluff, to raise awareness of heart health.
I need your support to complete my mission of fundraising $1,000 to help heart disease prevention!

I'll do all the hard work (train for and complete the ride), but I really need you in order to make a difference to the hearts of New Zealanders.
