I heard about the Round The Bays Half Marathon from a friend a couple of months ago, and I thought "Hmmmm, I could probably do that", but didn't really think too much more about it. However, when I looked on the event website and saw that you could become a "Heart Runner" in aid of the Heart Foundation, I decided to take the plunge and start training for the event! Like a lot of people, I have a family member who has been affected by heart disease. My dad had a heart attack in 2005, due to a mixture of high cholesterol and smoking. He's had bypass surgery and is still trucking along now, but it scared the hell out of me at the time. He could have easily been one of the 16 New Zealanders that die as a result of coronary heart disease each day. That's one person every 90 minutes. And many of these deaths are premature and preventable. That sucks. A lot. |
