Each of us is born with the most precious gift. A lifetime.

And each is unique because each of us fills their life differently; different experiences, relationships, and, of course, choices – big ones and heaps of little ones.

People say, ‘it’s the little things that make the biggest difference,’ and so it’s true of all those little choices. They are everywhere, every day, promising vitality, joy and fulfilment. They’re the ones that affect our health, our outlook on life, and lift us to play our part in the lives of others near to us. We just need to know how to spot and grab them so we can achieve our dreams and ambitions, and be there always for our children, passing on our life’s stories to guide and encourage them.

The answer is simple. It’s energy. The energy that comes from the heart. The heart is our engine, our furnace, the source of who we are. It is the start and finish of everything we do, have done and are still yet to achieve in our lifetime.
With every beat our heart supplies our vitality and feeds our soul. As it takes in, so it pumps out. Just as we teach, so we learn; give, so we receive; sleep, so we wake, feed, so we nourish. You know the rhythm. It’s the ebb and flow of life itself.

And the more energy we have, the more enjoyment we get and the more enjoyable we are to be around. What’s more is this energy is free, has been since the day we were born.

So it saddens us how so many lose it, let it go and even give it away.

We’re the Heart Foundation. And we’re determined to stop the disease that shuts down more lives of New Zealanders than any other. Disease that chokes the heart and cuts short too many stories before they’re told.

We know a lot about how to fight this killer, but we can’t do it on our own. We can when people in the community decide to help us and support us. We can when people at risk decide that enough’s enough and take back the energy they’ve let go for too long. And we can when Kiwis decide there’s more to do to fulfil their lives and the lives of those they love.

That’s what inspires Heart Foundation volunteers to give more of their time, and our researchers to discover more of the answers we need. But we’re not the only ones with more to do.

What have you still to achieve? What do your children still have to learn from you, and you from them? Are there stories you still have to tell, truths to pass on, love to give, moments to savour? Of course. You’re not done yet.

And there is so much good that we can fill our lives with if we choose. And we’ve got a lifetime to do it.
